Before you write: when the grid prints the wrong size

Usually it's the print dialog. Most PDF readers shrink a page to fit the printer's margins unless you tell them not to.

In the print dialog, choose Actual size (or 100%, or Scale: 100). Avoid Fit, Shrink oversized pages and Poster.
Print the first tile on its own and measure its ruler check. It should be exactly 1 inch. If it is, print the rest.
Pick the paper the file is made for: the Letter files for US Letter, the A4 files for A4.
For the 18 x 24 inch print-shop sheets, ask the shop to print at 100% with no scaling.
